Chapter 12

“How is she?” Maxim asked Ada as he took the seat next to Kylie’s bed the human woman had just vacated.

Ada’s eyes softened with sympathy. “I’m sorry, but nothing’s changed,” she replied. “The best thing I can report is that her heart rate and blood pressure remain stable.”

“It’s still a few hours until her father arrives. There isn’t much more I can productively do right now until my uncle finishes speaking with all the various Elders, so I’ll watch over her while I wait for his call or it’s time to pick up Paul from the airport, whichever comes first.”

“You look a bit peaky,” she fretted. “How long has it been since you’ve slept?”

“I’ll sleep once Paul arrives,” Maxim answered, sidestepping her question.

After frowning down at him worriedly for a long, tense moment, she finally sighed and nodded reluctantly. “Don’t hesitate to call either Thea or me if you need anything.”

The room was unnervingly still after Ada left, the sounds of Kylie’s and his own heartbeats and breaths echoing throughout the darkened room more loudly than they should have. With no one but his sleeping friend to witness, Maxim allowed himself to sag back into the chair in exhaustion.

It had been over twenty-four hours since he had last slept, and what made matters worse was all the emotional upheavals he had experienced in the last few hours, not to mention that damnable sense of déjà vu sitting at someone’s bedside always made him feel since Amarillo. He turned and looked down at Kylie’s face, feeling not only helpless but guilty. He should have never let them come to London alone. He shouldn’t have let Hunter talk him out of sending a few wolves from his security staff to back them up. He closed his eyes tightly with pain both old and new.

He shouldn’t have allowed himself to become so weak.
